Designed and developed to provide Soviet forces with a single-seat attack a/c comparable to the USAF A-10. The NATO reporting name, Frogfoot, was allocated in 1982 when the type was first deployed to Afghanistan. In this theatre, much effort was devoted to evolving methods for close coordination with Mil Mi-24 helicopter gunships. The Su-25 incorporates armor protections around the cockpit including a bullet-proof windscreen.
