Built as a result of a US Navy study into pilot training which had identified the need for an aircraft capable of taking a student that had graduated from the ab initio phase through to the point of initial carrier qualifications. The original A models where under powered with a single engine and the design was quickly modified for two engines (B models). The C models had an engine change to the less powerful GE J85. A total of 529 of all types were built. The a/c is currently being replaced by the T-45 Goshawk.
