Grumman's first amphibian design was offered to the US Navy as a paper project that the Navy agreed to fund the prototype from. The design's first flight was 4/May/1933 with an initial production run of 27 a/c with the first delivery in late 1934. Production continued until 1941 with the Coast Guard and Marine Corps also deploying the a/c. A further 330 (J2F-6 models) were constructed by Columbia Aircraft Corp.
