Starting life as the CW-20 project in 1936 in an attempt to penetrate the commercial airliner market held by Boeing, Douglas and Lockheed the a/c was modified to meet USAAC requirements by stripping the interior, replacing the seating with canvas seating and eliminating the pressurization system. The C-46 saw service in all WW2 theaters, distinguishing itself in the India-China Hump transport. Move than 3,000 a/c were built.
