The Yak-3 was the second design to carry this designation (the first being abandoned in late 1941 due to poor engine reliability and a shortage of suitable building materials). It was built to fill a need for an agile fighter capable of achieving its maximum performance at low altitude. The prototypes completed their service trials in October 1943 with full scale production authorization being granted in June 1944. The a/c remained in production until early 1946 with eventually 4848 being built. The Yak-3UA are a result of a deal made with Yakovlev to build a handful of new a/c using the original wartime drawings, fixtures, dies and tools, but powered by Allison engines (UA designation).
